Summer is the season for design events worldwide, and June is the kickoff. Throughout this month, prominent design conferences and festivals will open alongside important events in other creative fields. Let’s just say that you (and your social media feeds) will definitely be busy.

Art Basel’s annual events always have a significant impact on the design world. Its design-oriented edition, Design Miami in Basel, Switzerland, established itself as a leading forum, bringing together influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators, and critics to discuss cultural and commercial aspects of design. The event will happen alongside Art Basel, which will showcase works by 4,000 artists. If you can’t be there, you can check your Instagram for updates and highlights.

When and where: June 12-17, Basel, Switzerland

2017 highlights:

Held at the striking Somerset House, the event will exhibit works by both up-and-coming and established international illustrators. This year’s edition (on its 42nd round!) will examine recent developments in the industry, and add an experimental category for “pushing the boundaries of illustration”. The show resonates long after it closes, so be sure to check it out for updates and announcements of the winners.

When and where: June 6-20, Somerset House, London

On the other side of the globe, Atlanta Design Festival (formally Design is Human) is hosting its 12th edition that’s concentrating on creative knowledge, design economy and cultural aspects of design. With architecture tours and activities around the city, as well as the Design Economy Expo, it marks itself as one of the most unique events out there.

When and where: June 8-August 19, Kunsthalle Basel, Basel, Switzerland

The eighth edition of the LA Design Festival will host 100+ events that celebrate the local design culture. The year’s presenting sponsor is Find Your Grind and will host pop-ups in culture hubs throughout downtown LA. Highlights: Tenzo, Marfa Book Co., LA Original, and installations by Erin Althea, AN Concept, and more. The event also offers a chance to catch Lauren Halsey’s fantastic exhibition at MOCA, “We Still Here, There“.

Exhibition: Made in LA 2018

The Hammer Museum is hosting another iteration of its biennale show called Made in LA, and will show a selection of 32 local artists ranging from 29 to 97 years old. The cultural and aesthetic landscape is bound to be interesting, especially considering the museum’s recently added artists Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Rafa Esparza to its Artists Council to discuss the institution’s program.
