OK just contacted wix support, I did speak to a lovely customer service agent who politely told me that beyond 50GB there is nothing that can be done to increase the storage capacity from user uploads into a collection.
This is one of the problems with wix, those people with real coding skills historically use platforms that can be developed outside of wix and are tailored to their own needs. Which is why very few experts exist outside of wix who have any confidence in developing an external DB for increased storage with wix.
It all comes down to my lack of knowledge in coding which is a shame if the concept is good and people like me just want to work out how to commercialise a site against the hosting costs at a fair price to the end user and have confidence that as my usership grows so can my hosting plan.
Like i said to the customer service agent, "I do not want to be in a position, where my hosting is cut off for website growth or some workaround is offered like copy your site and start a new plan is offered 12 months down the line."
So i can't accept comments from some, like"50GB is a lot" as that won't help.
I can see that this is a tricky one, maybe Wix could offer something more to users with valid questions.
Increased storage options beyond VIP
Video tutorials on how to create and link external DBs - even if the DB is not Wix i.e. Amazon
I would love to hear from anyone with the right competencies and track record of implementing an external DB with wix that will allow users to upload content directly into that DB and download to the wix page as per the current collection functionality where developed.
I think Wix code is advanced and brilliant but the commercial department really haven't caught up based on clients who may never use Corvid due to the excellent apps available with drag and drop.
and finally, if wix could confirm that site uploads will not be prohibited beyond 50GB storage until they provide an increased price tariff, that would be a good start.
Thanks - sorry for the long read

Hi @Quentin Plomteux so realistically how much is it likely to cost to get an external DB setup if i employed an expert so that from the off, all data was stored on a scalable DB and retrieved from the external DB?
I'm thinking if i can get some assurance on these costs and time to implement, i will soon be able start a wix plan.
Currently, although the api exists with wix which is great there doesn't seem to be many competent people out there in the market place who i can find to help me with this request at a fair price.
Ideally i would like someone with Amazon cloud experience of creating DBs for wix websites
and in an even better world, Wix would allow users to simply scale up beyond 50GB at an agreed fixed or variable price and have a discussion with a customer about that option.
I mean ultimately, if customers could scale up storage within wix then i feel that wix would be the absolute best business out there
Regards
Adam
Yeah no problem: contact me at quentin@enhancement.studio I've an example of external database on my website https://www.code.enhancement.studio/wix-external-database But I would not worry about that if I were you. You can have up to 50Gb of storage with wix business vip Plan.
Focus first on your 100 customers and you'll worry about your next 10 000 later ;)
Ok a question. Could you export data from collections to an external site using the job scheduler?, delete some of the current storage in Wix Collections and then call the external data to perform when needed to increase the storage capacity of wix site.
This question is really to understand what happens if my site reaches the current storage limit of the maximum permissible plan
You could possibly use simple data hooks to continuously update data from a collection into csv file via json. or even use zapier or the wix automation
You can export the data from your Database on your live site.
If you want to send the data to an external app or site on a recurring basis, you can use the Job Scheduler function and Fetch to send the json payload after querying your database and retrieving the items.
