New Feature: Address Input

Check your collection privilege's to see users that are not admin can submit to the collection.

@Latifah Todd I already did that. I chose Form Submission (so what visitor can do is only add content). Funny thing is; I also connected my dataset to automation so that whenever that field is filled and submitted I get Email. In the Live version, even though the data is not stored in the Dataset, I get an Email notification. Confused?

I have just read the post 'address input not selecting address' and my problem seems to be similar but i have already tried that solution beforehand. Is there any other way to gather address information without the need to use google API or something of the sort?

Let's see if I got it right -

You are trying to extend a Wix Form with an Address Input element. You added an Address Input element from the Add Panel and placed it inside your Wix Form. Then, using the Content Manager, you added an Address field to the submissions table that had been generated by the Wix Form. You connected the Address Input to the Address field, and now you would like the Submit Button that came with the Wix Form to submit the address in the Address Input together with all the other fields as a single item in the collection.

Is this correct?

If that's the case, I am not aware of any way you can do this yourself right now. Talked to the Product Manager of Wix Forms about this, and she is unaware of anything you can do entirely on your end either.

Have you ever managed to extend a Wix Form like this?

It seems to us that for this to work we would have to add support for this type of Wix Form + Custom Form hybrid.

You are welcome to request this feature and have others vote on it.

At the moment it seems to me that the options you have are:

1. Replace the Wix Form with a "custom" form, that is, a from built from Input Elements connected to the same Dataset and a Button connected to a Submit action on this same Dataset.

2. Use a Text Form Field instead of an Address Input.

We realise this isn't what you want, but I'm afraid it's all we can offer at the moment. Maybe someone on this forum has better suggestions.

By the way, we are planning to add an Address Form Field to Wix Forms, but as of yet have no estimate of when it will be available. You are welcome to request this feature as well of course, if it suits your needs better.

Never fun to give a user this type of answer, but I hope at least it clarifies what your options are.

@Eyal Michael Cohen Thanks Eyal, Yes, I think you've summed it up. Regarding your suggestions: 1. The form is pretty long and needs to be handled multi-step, so I'd think it needs to be a Wix form rather than custom. 2. If I use a Text Form Field it wont connect to Google PLaceslAPI, right? That would be fine, for example if autocomplete did function, but I wanted to use the Address Input to update a location on a map in the dynamic page (as in a real estate property ad). So I'm guessing this woudn't be possible with a Text Form Field? Can the Address Input form sit separately, outside of the Wix form, (perhaps on a get started page prior to the multi-step form), and then augment the same record in the Dataset?

1. I absolutely understand the pain in building such a long, multi-step, form as a custom form. Wix Forms takes care of many things for you (built-in multi-step functionality, sending emails on submission, maintaining your Contacts list and more), and obviously implementing all of them yourself because of one missing feature is time consuming and error prone. Still, you should know that you have this option as a last resort, if the missing feature is invaluable.

2. Correct, only the Address Input connects to the Google Maps API for populating the suggestion list and retrieving geolocation data for the selected suggestion. I am not sure if you can take the text entered into a Text Input and call the Google Maps API inside an HTML Element. Note that the address submitted to the collection will simply be the text the visitor entered.

Your last suggestion is very interesting!

I think it doesn't really matter whether you decide to put the Address Input inside your Wix Form or outside of it. What is important is to use the wix-data afterInsert() Hook in your backend code to update the record right after submission and set the address field with the value in your Address Input. For this to work, you need access to the address value from your backend code. You can store it in a "temporary" collection whenever Address Input fires onChange(). If this causes performance issues you can consider adding a Button near your Google Maps preview element that the visitor has to click to save the address after verifying it's indeed the address she's looking for (e.g. have the button say something like "Yep, that's it!"). @Michael Bly Very much like other Input elements - use the Connect to Data panel to connect the address to a field of type Address. Please make sure to set your Dataset permissions to Write-only.

@Nic Pijpers Whilst its clearly not great practice for commercial use, for troubleshooting purposes I derestricted my API key. However, the Address Input Element still gave me no joy. My Google Cloud Console recorded no API requests leading me to believe there is a problem with the element itself, or I am still doing something very wrong (I can't think what).

I've contacted Wix customer support to see if they can help with the issue. However, if you have any more suggestions do let me know.

@Nic Pijpers Using getSecret() is a cool idea. In fact, we are considering having the Address Input use the Secrets Manager behind the scenes in the future, to make sure all Address Input elements on a single website use the same Google Maps API key (this is a restriction that Google applies on these API keys anyhow, but the current experience in the Connect Google Maps panel doesn't enforce this).

However, from a security standpoint, I believe it would not eliminate the need to restrict the API key. This is because the Address Input creates a <script> tag that has the Google Maps API key hardcoded in it, even if we were to expose a .key property in the Corvid API of the Address Input and let you set it to what you retrieve from the Secrets Manager. These API keys are meant to be used in front-end code and be restricted using Google's HTTP referrers mechanism.

You also need billing enabled on a project 'created by you' not the one the StackDriver creates. StackDriver creates a new project on your Cloud account. You need one created by you.

Hey @Nic Pijpers, glad this worked itself out.

The switch from the first to the third preset doesn't sounds like something that can explain it. I would guess it had to do with a change you've made to your Google Cloud Platform project, that resulted (directly or indirectly) in the Geocoding API being enabled. Check this out.
